Valentine Rally for Romeo

Many of us followed the story of Romeo, a mixed lab breed who was stomped, slammed and beaten by his owner; a neighbor filmed the abuse. The owner has now been give a $500 fine and sentenced to 4 mos. in jail. However, under current Kentucky law, the animal is still his and when the owner gets out of jail, the dog, now in foster care with a vet, will be returned to him. There is a group negotiating to get the dog but giving Romeo up will have to be voluntary on the part of his owner/abuser.

HB 42 up for consideration in this legislative session will make forfeiture of the animal automatic with a conviction of animal cruelty or abuse and prohibit the abuser from owning any animals of the same species for 2 years. It covers all animals, not just cats and dogs.

Please call/write/email your legislators to tell them you support this bill.

There will be a rally sponsored by the Kentucky Animal Welfare Alliance and The Humane Society of the United States on Wednesday, Feb. 13 noon to l p.m. in the Capitol Rotunda to show support for this and other animal related legislation. Please tell your friends and make every effort to attend the rally. The passage of this bill will benefit Kentucky animals; no victim of abuse should be returned to his abuser.
